DRIVER (Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research) is a European project involving a partnership of universities and other research institutes that are working together to set up a European repositories infrastructure. The infrastructure will provide easy access to the results of scientific/scholarly research, ranging from articles and reports to research data, models, and visualisations.

One of the products of the first DRIVER project (2006-2007) was a “test bed” involving Dutch, German, French, British and Belgian institutions.

SURFshare has contributed to the DRIVER project in a number of ways, for example by drawing up guidelines for content providers and setting up a helpdesk for new institutions. It has also brought out three publications on various aspects of repositories:

The European Repository Landscape, Inventory study into the present type and level of OAI compliant Digital Repository activities in the EU by Maurits van der Graaf and Kwame van Eijndhoven.
This study is a survey of the development of repositories in all 27 countries of the European Union.

A DRIVER’s Guide to European Repositories; Five studies of important Digital Repository related issues and good practices, edited by Kasja Weenink, Leo Waaijers and Karen van Godtsenhoven.
This is a practical guide to setting up and developing a repository and associated services.

The Investigative Study of Standards for Digital Repositories and Related Services by Muriel Foulonneau and Francis Andrè.
This comprises a survey of the current standards and looks ahead to use in the long-term: what steps need to be taken now in order to ensure that we can keep up with future developments?

These three studies can be downloaded free of charge from Amsterdam University Press (They are also available as hardcopy.)
