Knowledge dissemination for universities of applied sciences
Repository infrastructure
The SURFshare programme aims to improve the knowledge infrastructure of Dutch universities of applied sciences by creating an infrastructure for interoperable repositories, comparable with those used by research universities. Repositories are an effective means of helping to disseminate practical know-how and thus raise the profile of universities of applied sciences. A large number of these institutions already have an interoperable repository.
Successful services based on repositories at universities of applied sciences include:
• The Knowledge Bank for Universities of Applied Sciences, the “showcase” for these institutions, with access to knowledge products including publications, graduation papers, and teaching aids.
• LOREnet, a portal to provide easier access to teaching aids at research universities and universities of applied sciences.

SHAREkit, a repository service
SURFshare provides detailed assistance for universities of applied sciences when they are setting up an interoperable repository infrastructure. This includes “SHAREkit”, the repository service for universities of applied sciences that do not have their own institutional repository. Institutions participating in the SHAREkit project are automatically included in both the Knowledge Bank for Universities of Applied Sciences and LOREnet.
Embedding
Once a repository has been installed, the universities of applied sciences find themselves faced by a whole range of strategic, organisational, practical, and copyright matters in facilitating access to their knowledge products. SURFshare collaborates with the institutions to create procedures, solutions, and awareness programmes.
Services tender for knowledge dissemination for universities of applied sciences
Using the repository infrastructure (the data layer), new services can be developed to further promote the dissemination and sharing of knowledge. There are regular calls for tender so that the vanguard of the Dutch higher education sector can test out innovations.
