A-Select
A-Select was developed over the past years in close collaboration between SURFnet and Alfa & Ariss. A-Select is middleware for authentication. It links various applications using a range of authentication possibilities. A-Select is the technology 'under the hood' of the national authentication facility, DigiD. The higher education community in the Netherlands is making extensive use of A-Select. SURFnet and Kennisnet are working on the rollout of this authentication service in the entire education vertical.
SURFfoundation participates in the Advisory Council of A-Select and in the ECP.NL National Authentication Platform. SURFfoundation is actively involved in relevant developments in the field of authentication.
Important functionalities and advantages of A-Select:
- Availability as open-source software
- Flexible application of various authentication technologies (which can be selected for each user and for each application) for logging onto web applications, including various password systems (RADIUS, LDAP, Active Directory), IP address and banking authentication, passwords sent in text messages (SMS) and PKI certificates
- Single sign-on
- Easy combination of applications on existing web servers
- Supports local applications as well as applications covering multiple institutions
- Broad basis within the Dutch education community, the Dutch government and others.
