What is streaming?

Streaming is a technology that enables people to listen to audio and to watch video over a network. In the past a file had to be stored locally. As streaming media hardly uses any disk space, an audio or video file can now be played almost immediately. The introduction of streaming technology has turned out to be a huge boost for the use of audio and video on the Internet.
