  • Collaboratory for Evidence Based Critical Reviews

Scholarly Communication - SURFshare Tenders
Status: Completed

The main goal of this project has been to support both online collaboration and communication during the creation of Evidence Based Critical Reviews.
Evidence Based Critical Reviews (EBCRs or CRs for short) are important in the processes of Evidence Based Medicine, because a CR, in the context of a clinical appraisal, provides a full summary of all relevant, available and validated scientific medical research data, critically and systematically judged by experts. The creation of such a CR is done according to a strict protocol.
Collaboration during the creation and review-process is very import (for the quality of the CR) but is at the present time very traditionally organised, and could be very well supported by a collaboratory, as long as this collaboratory is consistent with the EBM-protocol.
The main result of this project is a collaborative tool in Sharepoint, which supports this interactive proces, according to the relevant protocol. A secondary result from this project is an evaluative report on the experiences of the end users of this EBCR-tool and of Sharepoint. The lessons learned are:

  • Programming in Sharepoint can be quick and easy, as long as you use the standard components available in Sharepoint. Developing your own components is a slow process and requires specialized knowledge from the programmers.
  • The end users found the Sharepoint user interface not intuitive. Therefore, for future users it may be a good idea to first introduce them to standard Sharepoint features, before teaching them about this EBCR-tool.

This project has been concluded at June 15, 2008, but a new project has started for the implementation of the EBCR-tool in a scientific community.
