A series of short films on Enhanced Publications describes what such publications are and why this new technique offers researchers added value. The films are based on lessons learned in five different innovation projects carried out within the context of the SURFshare programme in 2009.

Of all these films, the general introduction to Enhanced Publications contains English subtitels. This films also explains the added value of this technique.
The other films on Enhanced Publications (in Dutch) can also be viewed.

How it works in practice
An Enhanced Publication consists of a publication, usually a text, enhanced with extra materials. The publication may be an article in a journal, a dissertation, a report, a memorandum or a chapter in a book. Such publications can be enhanced by adding or linking them to research data, illustrations, videos, audio files, visualisations, metadatasets and post-publication data such as commentary or rankings.

In the film, researchers and support staff describe what it is like to produce an enhanced publication. The researchers work in a range of different disciplines, including psychology, law and physics, but also archaeology and the social sciences.

Reusing and improving research
Working with Enhanced Publications led the researchers to discover that adding background materials to publications allowed other researchers to review and repeat the research more easily. Enhanced Publications also proved to be useful in teaching. Students, for example, can repeat the research described in a publication and learn to analyse using the research data underlying the conclusions given in the publication. Enhanced Publications can also be a valuable tool for the general public. By linking policy documents to publications and the research data on which they are based, for example, the relevance of the research to society is made clear.

About SURFshare
The aim of the SURFshare programme is to improve access to cutting-edge research results by means of the latest ICT. That is possible, because ICT not only speeds up standard communication processes, but also changes the nature of the research cycle itself. The growing number of options for knowledge-sharing and dissemination mean that traditional publications, tools (for example models, algorithms and visualisations) and research data are increasingly interwoven.

SURFfoundation’s intention with the SURFshare programme is to create a common infrastructure that will facilitate access to research information and make it possible for researchers to share scientific and scholarly information.
