Amandus Lundqvist new SURF chairman
22-04-2010
SURF’s General Board has agreed unanimously to appoint Amandus Lundqvist as the foundation’s chairman. Lundqvist will accept his new job on 1 May. He succeeds Willem te Beest, a member of the Board of Governors of Leiden University, who has held this position for the past four years.
Maintaining the lead
As chairman of SURF, Lundqvist will work to develop a national, transparent, competitive ICT research infrastructure, maintain SURF’s lead in network infrastructures, promote open content, improve the quality of higher education, and increase the number of graduates.
Background
Amandus Lundqvist’s background is in ICT and higher education and research. He began his career at IBM in 1968, serving as General Manager and CEO of IBM Netherlands between 1992 and 2001. From 1 September 2002 to 1 May 2010, he was President of Eindhoven University of Technology.
Two worlds
'The nice thing about SURF,' says Lundqvist, 'is that it brings together two worlds: the world of ICT and the world of higher education. That fits in perfectly with my background in the ICT sector and my work in Eindhoven. I have had dealings with all the parties involved in SURF, and now I’m working with them again, but from a different perspective.'
