Open Access week bannerOctober 19-23, will mark the first international Open Access Week. Open Access Week is an opportunity to broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access to research, including access policies from all types of research funders, within the international higher education community and the general public.
Various organisations in the Netherlands will be organising activities to promote Open Access. SURFfoundation will be playing a coordinating role.

Examples of Activities:

Friday 16 October

  • Round table discussion on Open Access by prominent scientists (Univ. Twente)
  • 08.30 - 12.00:  Information stand at the entrance of the PC Hoofthuis (UvA)
  • 12.15 - 12.45:  Lunch presentation in room 1.01, Bungehuis (UvA)

Monday 19 October

Tuesday 20 October

Wednesday 21 October

Thursday 22 October

Friday 23 October

All week

  • Digitalising paper publications and making these accessible in UvA-DARE (UvA)
  • Fryske Akademy, Dutch Institute for Ecology (NIOO), Meertens Institute, Dutch Interdisciplinary Demografic Institute (NIDI) and the Fungal Biodiversity Centre(CBS) will be working at making their articles accessible in their repositories in the Open Access Week.
  • A wide variety of promotional activities organised by the mediatheques of universities of applied sciences and university libraries.

Wednesday 28 October

  • Taking up the final score of the OA dokters, round table discussion on copyright and Open Access finished by a short quiz. (Univ. Leiden)

Open Access Week builds on the momentum started by the student-led national day of action in 2007 and carried by the 120 campuses in 27 countries that celebrated Open Access Day in 2008. The organizers are: SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition), the PLoS (The Public Library of Science), Students for FreeCulture , OASIS (the Open Access Scholarly Information Sourcebook); Open Access Directory (OAD); and eIFL.net (Electronic Information for Libraries).
