Digital Rights
Focus Areas:
Innovations in e-learning and e-science are frequently hampered by digital rights issues. Digital rights are therefore the focus of many of SURFfoundation’s activities, which are carried out by the Digital Rights Expertise Community (SURFdirect). SURFdirect’s activities focus on a range of different topics: education and research repositories; images and audio; image banks; open access; copyright and Creative Commons; and licences. SURFdirect approaches these topics from two different perspectives. On the one hand, it considers the digital rights of researchers, teachers and students in their own material; on the other, it looks at third-party digital rights – in other words, what is a researcher, teacher or student permitted to do with someone else's material?
SURFdirect provides information to higher education and research on these topics and offers advice and support. It develops practical tools, for example toolboxes, FAQs, research projects and recommendations. SURFdirect also provides public information and helps raise awareness and foster the exchange of good practices.
